Illusory Material , Jiani Zeng and Honghao Deng, are fascinated by textures and surfaces of objects and materials. They first announced Illusory Material as a computational workflow and new way of thinking to create seemingly impossible materiality in the physical reality. The intent was to produce textural experiences with color that could only be previously created with digital skin.
Illusory Material collaborated with Stratasys to launch a new series of luxury packaging, using computational design to mimic the dynamism and colors of nature to create the Lenticular Perfume bottle. Perfume is a very personal item; it’s not only about the smell but also the touch, the look and even the sound when the liquid is released from the nozzle - every single detail plays a part in the experience.
The Lenticular Perfume design is inspired by natural gradients: the color of sunset, a blue sky with a touch of orange, the strange purple from the borderless sea, a sharp collision between the sand and water. The idea was to achieve more than attaching static patterns onto the object's surface as, like in nature, everything is not static or binary but rather rich and dynamic. There is depth under the surface and richness in the materials used in this design which seem to be in motion. A subtle dynamism has been created with physical materials using light and the fundamental laws of physics, as in nature.
“With the Stratasys J850 Prime 3D printer we were able to print a transparent layer on a colored, doubly curved surface; when lights travel through the transparent lenses, they refract towards different directions, creating this “dream-like” color-shifting visuals.” Jiani Zeng, Co-founder Illusory Material. “We think this project is just a start; with multi-material 3D printing, we want more than programming material properties; one day, we could probably compute “sensations” - the touch, the smell, and even the feelings of any physical objects.” Honghao Deng, Co-founder Illusory Material.
